Halcyon days begin

Halcyon days are said to be seven days in winter when storms don't occur either side of the shortest day of the year. The phrase derives from the legend of the goddess Alcyone, who, as a kingfisher, laid eggs and nested on the beach. During this time, her father Aeolus, the god of the winds, calmed the waves so his daughter could nest safely. My Olde Farmer's Almanac says halcyon days began on December 15. And the term perfectly describes the Bay Area weather for the past few days this year.
