Stalking feral bumble bees on the Alameda dunes

Photos by Sarah Phelan

Yesterday, I came upon this juicy feral bumble bee queen. She was foraging for nectar and pollen on the Alameda dunes.  I was mesmerized by her velvety fur, the tiny hooks on her feet, the translucence of her darkly veinated wings. And I loved the way she looked massive compared to the amber-banded honey bees who were visiting the same plant.
