Field of dreams

Photos and text by Sarah Phelan

There's a field near my place that's full of these crazy towering jewels of Pride of Madeira plants.
Most of the year they look like unassuming green bushes. But in spring they become the stuff of dreams.

Honey bees love these plants. They almost get lost in them.
For a bee to land atop one of these plants would be like me scaling the  Empire State building.

Bumble bees love them too.
Monarch butterflies like nectaring there.

But honey bees outnumber everybody else in this magical spot.
